Dr. Gene Young Room
Dedication and Reception

Saturday, March 30, 2013
Hayden-Clark Alumni Center

3:00–4:30 p.m.

Dr. Young was a change agent at Bradley. He was instrumental in establishing the Dr. Romeo B. Garrett Center and the Garrett Scholarship Dinner, developing the Black Pan-Hellenic Council and bringing notable black leaders to campus such as Julian Bond, Gil Scott-Heren, Dick Gregory, Nikki Giovanni and Dr. Benjamin Hooks. He took his activism to another level by hiring black students for work study assignments and involving them in service projects in the Peoria community. At times his classes were controversial nevertheless he began a dialogue about the black experience on campus that continues today.
